Welsh Hills Bakery Carbon Footprint – 2025
At Welsh Hills Bakery, sustainability is at the core of our operations. As we strive to reduce our environmental impact, we are estimating our carbon footprint for 2025 to track our progress and continue our journey toward a greener future. We are focused on several key areas to reduce our carbon footprint, including energy efficiency, waste reduction, and sustainable sourcing. Although we don’t have specific carbon values for 2025 yet, we are committed to making measurable progress year after year.
Our Key Sustainability Initiatives:
Waste Reduction: We’ve made significant strides in reducing waste, particularly by improving our waste management practices. Composting, recycling, and minimizing food waste during production are all part of our ongoing efforts.
Sustainable Packaging: In 2025, we are proud to be transitioning to more eco-friendly packaging, including reducing the use of plastic and focusing on packaging materials that align with our sustainability goals.
Energy Efficiency: Our bakery continues to focus on energy-saving measures, such as using renewable energy sources and investing in more energy-efficient technologies to minimize our energy consumption.
Sustainable Sourcing: We prioritize locally sourced, sustainable ingredients, which not only support local farmers but also reduce the environmental impact associated with long-distance transportation.
Eco-friendly Transportation: Our delivery routes are optimized for fuel efficiency, and we are actively exploring alternative, low-carbon transportation options to further reduce emissions.
We are committed to continuously improving and monitoring our impact, and we will share updates as we make progress toward our sustainability goals. With the support of our customers, we’re baking for a more sustainable future, one step at a time.
Our scope targets are:
Scope One – 10% reduction in absolute baseline figure by 2030 – from 131.7 to 119 tonnes CO2e in 2030.
Scope Two – 20% reduction in absolute baseline figure by 2030 – from 81 to 65 tonnes CO2e in 2030.
Scope Three – 15 % reduction in Intensity from 0.59 kgCO2e / £ traded to 0.50 kgCO2e / £
For 2023, the total annual Carbon footprint for the company is 2,502 tonnes of CO 2 e based on the accurate data collection, consolidation, and emissions quantification for the activities of Welsh Hills
Bakery (see Annex One). This report is an estimate, based on the data available. As data collection
improves, the accuracy of the calculations will also improve.
This is a 4% increase on the year 2022 value. The increase is due to greater use of electricity and gas over the year, as well as slightly different emission factor calculations.
Quantification of Emissions
All emissions are calculated using the appropriate Defra emission factors for the relevant activity.
Our carbon Footprint for 2023
Carbon Footprint by Scope Year 2023
Scope | Carbon Footprint (tonnes) |
One | 145 |
Two | 97 |
Three | 2260 |
TOTAL | 2502 |
As a a business, we are committed to achieving net zero by 2035, and are already making progress with successful carbon
reduction projects such as:
Scope 1: fine-tuning production planning to reduce the amount of time the gas ovens are operating
Scope 2- we are committed to installing solar panels onto the factory roof area by end 2026, which will significantly reduce
the amount of electricity we will draw from the grid
Scope 3: Ingredients – we are proactively sourcing lower carbon footprint ingredients e.g Coconut Oil instead of Palm Oil
We are working with our suppliers to fine-tune our ordering patterns in line with our more efficient
production planning, to achieve reduced numbers of deliveries, thus reducing vehicle usage and fuel consumption
We are working with our customers to reduce the number of deliveries per month, by increasing
sales order volumes to reduce vehicle fuel consumption
We have focused our engineering team to work out production wastage that goes to landfill r
incinerator, by improving the equipment operation capability and function to reduce the waste – we have achieved a 21% reduction in production waste since January 2024
The business views its CRP as strategic to its success, and to support its customers and end-consumers in creating a more sustainable future for us all
